本专辑是著名指挥家莱纳（ Fritz Reiner, 1888-1963 ）的指挥芝加哥交响乐团的传奇名演全搜录。莱纳自1953年被聘为芝加哥交响乐团的指挥，在莱纳的严格训练下，打造了芝加哥交响乐团厚实的演奏实力。而透过当时立体声的录音技术，莱纳的录音能带给人们强烈的震撼，也因此音响迷们以「莱纳之声」来赞誉这个团队所营造的管弦乐美声。

1898 年莱纳（ Fritz Reiner）出生于布达佩斯，23岁担任布达佩斯国立歌剧院（ Budapest Volksoper）的指挥，两年后被指派担任德勒斯登皇家歌剧院的指挥，就在此时他获得了与理察．史特劳斯共事的机会，协助史特劳斯制作多部歌剧，以及指挥《没有影子的女人》在德国地区的首演。1922年莱纳担任辛辛那提交响乐团的指挥，九年后前往克提斯音乐学院（Curtis Institue of Music）工作。1938-48 年间担任匹兹堡交响乐团的音乐总监，之后来到大都会歌剧院。1953年担任芝加哥交响乐团的音乐总监，为乐团建立起无比崇高的名声。1962年因为健康问题卸下职位，第二年便与世长辞。

莱纳不但擅长组织并管理乐团，同时他擅长指挥的曲目也十分广泛，无论在交响曲、管弦乐曲或是歌剧方面，均难不倒他。无论是均衡完美的莫扎特作品，或是理察·施特劳斯大块文章似的长篇大论，他都能应付欲如，然而对于二十世纪的当代音乐，或是如约翰·施特劳斯轻巧悠扬的圆舞曲，他也都能恰如其分地表现完美。
